Horse-drawn carriage heritage (2)

What remains in France of this booming industry?

Not a single carriage from the 17th century, barely 40 from the 18th, and currently 2,500 listed from the 19th. Several hundred have probably yet to be indexed.

Three-quarters of the cars listed, most of the horse-drawn heritage currently known, are in private hands.

Public collections

Among the cars listed, only 500 to 600 are in public collections or museums belonging either to the French State or to communities:

Private heritage

The remaining three-quarters, most of the horse-drawn heritage currently known, are in private hands: the owners of castles or mansions still maintaining family carriages, or collectors and enthusiasts practising traditional driving with vintage carriages.

A minuscule portion of this heritage (85 vehicles) is protected by a classification as historical monument: 33 are classified and 52 inscribed.
